THEsite is located next to the small town of Nuxis (from Sardinian “nuts”) in the south-west of Sardinia (Sulcis). Behind the village rises Monte Tamara (849m). On its slopes was carried out an intense mining activity since ancient times.
Besides the old mines, the municipality of Nuxis includes the Nuragic sacred well of Tittino and the charming rural church of S.Elia from the Byzantine era. Both the sites are 4 km away from the village, southbound.

Geologically, the land around Nuxis is rich in sandstone, schist and metamorphic limestone. Sulphide mineralizations, that have been subject of plantation, were settled nearby faults (e.g. the mine of Sinibidraxiu) and tectonic contacts (e.g. the mine of Monte Tamara). The faults genesis is particularly worthy of interest. These faults originated in a late stage of the Variscan orogeny and then they suffered a sort of rejuvenation during a period of extension. These tectonic events were followed by the settlement of mixed sulphite mineralizations and their subsequent dislocation (Terziario, Ciclo Alpino).
